Four-Color Dreidel

Dreidel Bingo needs a four-color dreidel. You can buy one wherever you buy your dreidels. If your local dreidel retailer does not carry four-color dreidels, here are three different solutions:

  1. You can order a four-color dreidel from Dreidel Bingo. You spin it twice. The first time for the letter, the second time for the color. The price is much higher than it would be in a store, because of shipping and handling. Just add it on during checkout.
  2. You need two dreidels for this. You take a regular boring dreidel and buy small colored circles from a company like Avery, and carefully try to place them in the same place on each one of the sides. You spin each dreidel once.
  3. If you only have a single dreidel, and you don't want to put stickers on it, you can decide from the beginning what the color value of each letter is, for example, shin is red, hey is blue, nūn is yellow, and gimmel is green. Just like with a four-colored dreidel, you spin twice, the first time for the letter, the second time for the color.

How to play DREIDEL BINGO

Spin the four-color dreidel twice to find a color and a letter. Mark the matching symbol on your game sheet. The first player to get four in a row calls out “Latke!”

To Begin

Players may be given 8 DREIDEL BINGO cards at the beginning of the game or be given a new DREIDEL BINGO card at the beginning of every round.

Single Turn

A different person spins the dreidel to find the letter/colour combination every turn.

In SINGLE DREIDEL BINGO, the dreidel-spinner each round spins the four-coloured dreidel two times. The first time, they announce the colour (blue, red, green, yellow), and the second time, they announce the letter (gimmel, nūn, shin, hey).

Marking the Spin

Everyone finds the corresponding circle on their DREIDEL BINGO card, and marks it with a marker or pen. In every case, a dedicated responsible person marks down the spin on the official spin sheet.

Winning

The first person to get four in a row, in any direction, screams out "Latke!" and upon validating it with the official spin sheet, receives 1 coin (not included).

The first person to get two rows, in any direction, screams out "Latkes!" and upon validating it with the official spin sheet, receives 2 coins (not included).

The first person to three rows, in any direction, screams out "Latkes with Applesauce*!" and upon validating it with the official spin sheet, receives 3 coins (not included). And with that the round ends.

*They may also scream out "Latkes with Sour Cream" or "Latkes with Guacamole", in accordance with your family tradition. Some people scream out "Latke, Latke, Applesauce!" instead. This has been ruled acceptable.

Endgame

A game of DREIDEL BINGO traditionally lasts 8 rounds, for some reason that everyone has forgotten. Winners should be able to exchange their gelt for prizes.

Some people also take their winnings and play a round of dreidel, but this is dependent on your family tradition.

About

Dreidel Bingo was created by Ezra Butler in 2024 in Chicago. Ezra spends the majority of his time as independent researcher about the history and language of color for his newsletter Colorphilia. Lately, he has focused on researching the Jewish origins of Robin Hood with peer-reviewed research forthcoming.

History of Dreidel Bingo

  1. 2024

Dreidel Bingowas invented in Chicago, somewhat by accident. Ezra was in a party planning meeting and everyone was trying to decide what game to play. He said "What about Dreidel Bingo?" without fully thinking it through or how the game would work. It was played by more than 250 people at Emanuel Congregation's annual Hanukkah party. It was a lot of fun and a huge success.

  2. 2025

Home and party versions were printed and shipped to dozens of people and organizations in both the US and the UK. Each Dreidel Bingo card was a one round version. Some last minute ingenuity was required to create a version which could be quickly sent to LabShul for their Hanukkah party.

  3. 2026

In light of the increase in shipping prices, we decided to take the version we created for LabShul and make it easier for people to download by themselves. We've added customization to every sheet, with the ability to generate color-blind accessible versions, so everyone can play Dreidel Bingo.

FAQs

  • Is Dreidel Bingo more fun than traditional dreidel?

Dreidel Bingo is, at least, twice as much fun as traditional dreidel, because everyone spins twice, and everyone can win on any spin. In traditional dreidel, only the person spinning is able to win or lose on their turn.
